What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points in the body, typically known as trigger points or myofascial trigger points. These needles are very similar to acupuncture needles, but the goals and principles of dry needling are distinct. Dry needling is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
 
Purpose: Dry needling aims to release or deactivate trigger points, which are tight knots of muscle fibers that can develop in muscles due to injury, overuse, or stress. These trigger points can cause pain and referred pain in other parts of the body.
 
Technique: During a dry needling session, a trained healthcare provider inserts needles into the trigger points. The term "dry" needling refers to the fact that no medication or injection is delivered through the needles. The insertion of the needle itself is believed to stimulate a healing response in the affected muscle tissue.
  1. Effect: Dry needling can lead to several effects, including the release of muscle tension, improved blood flow, and pain relief. It may also promote the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body.

  3. Avoid Heat or Ice: It's generally recommended to avoid applying heat or ice to the treated area immediately after dry needling. These can interfere with the body's natural healing response. However, your healthcare provider may provide specific guidance based on your individual case.
  4. Gentle Stretching: Light stretching of the treated muscles can be helpful in the days following a dry needling session. Your healthcare provider may demonstrate or recommend specific stretches to maintain flexibility and prevent muscle tightness.
  5. Pain and Soreness: It's common to experience mild soreness or discomfort after dry needling. This may last for a day or two. Over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended by your healthcare provider if necessary, but avoid excessive use of pain medications.
  6. Monitor for Adverse Reactions: Keep an eye on the treated area for any signs of infection, excessive bleeding, or unusual symptoms. If you notice any of these, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
  7. Follow-Up Appointments: TT will schedule follow-up appointments as needed. Be sure to attend these appointments to assess your progress and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.
